Fatality Analysis Reporting System

Every time we get in a vehicle, rather it be behind the wheel or as a passenger, we are taking a chance on being in a wreck. There are so many distractions from phones to radios to eating. Most drivers spend an average of 30 minutes a day commuting to and from work. The dangerous activity of texting while driving is responsible for numerous accident and deaths each year. According to Crouch, Drews, and Strayer, (n.d.). the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration states that 8% of drivers are using their cell phones while driving (as cited by Glassbrenner, 2005). It seems like this number would be higher than what it is. With the use of cell phones, drivers’ behaviors have become hindered and they are at an elevated risk of missing traffic signals, and being involved in accidents. In a research using a car-following paradigm, participants drove on multilane freeways, followed other cars at a random pace and would apply their brakes at different times. There was a total of 30,800 fatal motor vehicle crashes involving 45,337 drivers in the United States the year of 2012. These fatal accidents resulted in 33,561 people dying. In that same year 3,050 fatal car accidents in the United States were a result from distracted driving. 378 fatal crashes that year were from the result of a cell phone being used and this resulted in 415 people being killed. Data from the chart shows that drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 years old make up the largest group of distracted drivers though only 10% of those drivers were involved in fatal distraction-affected crashes.
