Fatal Flaws of Characters in Romeo and Juliet Everyone has a fatal flaw that contributes to their fate. Most of the characters in Shakespeare’s plays have at least one or more fatal errors. The characters in Romeo and Juliet are no exception to this. Every character in Romeo and Juliet has their own fatal errors. One fatal flaw of Romeo is that he is too emotional. Tybalt’s fatal error is anger. And a fatal weakness possessed by Juliet is her immaturity. The fatal flaws of various characters in Romeo and Juliet, lead to their tragic fates. To begin with, Romeo’s fatal weakness of letting his emotions act for him, leads him into much trouble throughout the course of the play. An example of this is, when she decided to marry Romeo after knowing him for only one day. Romeo and Juliet met each other at the Capulet’s party, and instantly fell in love. Later, on the same day they met, Romeo sneaked into Juliet’s bedroom balcony, and there Juliet said to him: “If that thy bent of love be honourable/ Thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow” (II. ii. 143-144). This showed her immaturity, as she knew that Romeo was a rival Montague and still decided to marry him, without thinking of what her decision would and did cause. Another example of Juliet’s immaturity is that she threatened to kill herself, when she was forced by her father to marry Count Paris or become a street child. However, she was already to Romeo who was exiled from Verona. Juliet did not want to marry Paris, and wanted to be with Romeo. She went to Friar Lawrence for help, and threatened to kill herself saying, “If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help/… And with this knife I’ll help it presently” (IV. Iv. 52-54). Juliet said that if the Friar could not help her, she would help herself by committing suicide. This was immature, because instead of thinking of how she could be reunited with Romeo, she wanted to die.
