Fatal Flaws In Things Fall Apart

Hamlet, Oedipus Rex, Brutus, Romeo and Juliet. All these story’s alike, all end in Tragedy. Tragic heroes often have fatal flaws that usually lead them down towards the path of destruction or their undoing, this is how I would describe Chinua Achebe’s Main Protagonist in the novel, Things fall apart. Okonkwo the son of unoka is seen in the eyes of the African igbo community of Umuofia as a Hardworking, respected Clan Member and Warrior, the people of Igbo also respected Okonkwo for being the most “masculine” person in the clan. As a result, Okonkwo has a title “defend” and he will stop at nothing to defend that title, even if it means doing something destructive.

One reason I think Okonkwo is a tragic hero is is because he stands up for what he believes but still kills himself in the end. I think the reason he killed himself was because the stress and hatred he encountered when the white man too over his village and basically forced them into believing their religion. Another reason I think Okonkwo is a tragic hero is because he never breaks.…

“Sacrifices have to be made” Acts Of Sacrifice By: Lars Jorgensen In Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe our main character Okonkwo is constantly facing sacrifices that must be made to improve the lives of his people and himself. Taking a man's life in order to not look weak is not the true meaning of sacrifice, its giving apart of you to the world around you for a benefit for you or your peers. Everyone has responsibilities that have to be carried or else some sort of consequence will occur sooner or later, and with those responsibilities come sacrifices. For example maybe you have a essay due at 11:59 but you really want to go out with your friends to hangout, so therefore you have to make a sacrifice either go hangout with your friends and get a bad grade or turn it in and get a good grade, so therefore you have to see what you”ll gain or lose from the outcome of…

The book Things Fall Apart gives many examples of how Okonkwo has failures and consequences for his failures and then has to live with these consequences and their negative effects. “Blindly following ancient customs and traditions doesn’t mean that the dead are alive, but that the living are dead” (Ibn Khaldun). There are the benefits and costs that come along with any religion or custom, but as seen in the novel Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe demonstrates how the consequences of the customs of the Umuofia tribe outweigh the benefits. While many of the tribe members of Umuofia all follow the tribe’s customs, one member in particular who is well respected, lives by the village's customs especially by the rule of masculinity, his name is Okonkwo. As a child, Okonkwo grew up with a father who was seen by the village more as a woman than a man, and all because he showed his emotions and rather play the flute than fight.…
