Fat Pig Essay Questions

In today’s society everybody is put into cliques that we aren’t supposed to wander out of. In Fat Pig they used Helen’s weight to put her in a different category from Tom, but beyond that we use religion, political affiliation, career, and social class to group people. It is incredibly difficult to have a relationship or even a friendship with someone who does not fit into our box. When we pursue these friendships and relationships we are confronted with a lot of difficult decisions. I experienced this when my best friend did not fit in with my regular group of friends, when I dated someone that was not like the other guys I dated, and when I tried to fit into groups I did not belong in. Before Mac, I would have said my type was a football or baseball player because that is who I had dated and who my friends dated. Mac was unlike anyone I had ever taken an interest in before. He played the trumpet, was in love with his truck, and was unapologetically obsessed with anything to do with firefighting. This was fine most of the time but at the beginning of our relationship I always got embarrassed when he would start babbling about firetrucks around my friends or family. He could talk for hours, even if no one around was interested. Like Tom, not being sure how to talk about Helen’s weight, I was not sure how to talk about Mac’s firefighting. I felt like there was a big part of his life neither I nor anyone else really understood. Unlike Tom, I figured out how to talk about it. Instead of trying to get him to change, I took an interest in his firefighting and started asking questions and accepting that part of his life. This small action helped our relationship.
