Fat Mall Cop

It was this specific experience that caused me to choose this topic. I felt that mall cops needed to be better understood for the dangerous job that they have. Most people believe that mall cops just ride around in their segways all day, but on this day that wasn’t the case. People need to understand the risk that come with being a mall cop. There are countless dangers inside of a highly public place that is a mall such as lethal attacks with weapons or diseases.
Mall cops have earned a negative image through movies or other irresponsible mall cops. Movies such as “Paul Blart Mall Cop” or “Observe and Report” have persuaded people to think negatively of mall cops. For example in both movies the mall cop is perceived as a fat mall cop who takes their job way too seriously. They both go out of their way to to stop criminals but in a goofy manner. Most mall cops do take their jobs seriously to protect others, but without all silliness that is Paul Blart playing rock band while the mall is being taken hostage. In a personal interview conducted by me with Richard Garcia, a mall cop from the Fashion Fair Mall in

When the public is breaking rules or being rude they must be kicked out of the mall. This leads to a mall cop having to escort that person out. The problem though is that the person is refusing to leave. It's moments like these that mall cops must take action in which pepper spray can be the solution. It usually results with the person leaving if not having to call the police to force that person out the mall. Sometimes that isn’t the case as mall cops have the right to arrest people and even carry an armed weapon which is legal in some states. People don’t think highly of mall cops as law enforcement but with the right to arrest and carry a weapon you can beg to differ. Mall cops should be better understood for these reasons listed above for they are misunderstood

In the film Crash, there are numerous stereotypes about each race and ethnicity throughout the movie. These stereotypes were challenged in this movie as each character found their own truths in their lives. At the end of each story, the stereotypes each character held were broken and proven to be wrong. A stereotype that I had challenged was that only small-town police officers are racist and use their status to do corrupt actions, while officers in major cities are the opposite.…

Stereotypes are, of course, not without any truth. The fact that there is a stereotype confirms its derivation of a common practice or characteristic of an individual or a part of a group. Acting on judgement based on stereotypes, however, is simply illogical and foolish. This especially applies to the practices of law enforcement. Although seemingly separate entities, the police force of a community and the general public it serves and protects are intertwined; each must be able to interact with no fear of repercussions on either party.…

Many things influence the public opinion of law enforcement including; job approval, officer demeanor, media, and the public 's contact with officers. The approval of the community is what gives officers their right to protect and serve them. Although some officers may not be upright and honorable people, many are forthright and honorable. When the media portrays officers of the law in any way, people in any community will assume that is what the law enforcement in their community is like even if the media took footage out of context and skewed the view. In today 's society everyone hates the police when they 're in trouble but they scrutinize officers when they are in need and the officer is not there at a moment 's notice…

The media is a huge factor in why people have such a bad perception of police officers. A police officer of 16 years on debate.org says, “Good cops do not make headlines. It only takes a hand full of officers that abuse their power, to give all cops a bad name.…

    Police Subculture Essay

As stated by Steve Herbert, “police are viewed as a distinct subgroup with a particular ethos that strongly influences their daily practices.” The subculture leads them to believe that they cannot appear weak no matter the circumstance and that they should essentially ignore their own humanity (Malmin). The subculture of police is also filled to the brim with close-mindedness, biases, prejudice, and suspicion (McCartney and Parent). Still, in spite of all of those negative aspects, there are some positive qualities of police subculture that somewhat assist in counterbalancing the more unfavorable aspects. People in law enforcement share respectable principles like teamwork, supportiveness, perseverance, loyalty as well as quite a few more.…

But in most cases it’s evident that what these officers do, is not within their job description. Before some of us were born, the issue with Rodney King transpired. Some young people, like myself, hadn’t heard of this case before, so after doing extensive research I can say without exaggerating that I am utterly astonished and disgusted. You’d think that after choosing a topic like this, I’d understand more, but the truth is that we won’t ever get accustomed to the way police officers act sometimes. Allow me to give you a brief insight to what happened the night of March 3, 1991.…
