People are constantly in a rush, and in this society, there is no time to waste. One has to move from one thing to the next with no time for food. For most, the solutions to this problem are fast foods and soft drinks, but with the problem of obesity rising, people tend to blame companies for the amount of fat put into foods and the amount of sugar in their soft drinks as the reason for obesity. Taxation has been anticipated as a means of reducing the consumption of these beverages and fast foods, thereby lowering health care costs, as well as a means of generating income that governments can use for health programs. Then again, people have to realize in order to lose weight, they have to want to lose it. Raising taxes on fast foods and soft drinks can only make a dent in the process that needs to be taken to reduce the amount of obese people in the U.S.
Some people may think that soft drinks and fast foods are not linked to obesity, but they are. In fact, most fast foods and soft drinks have an abundance of calories, sugars and salts. “The relationship between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and body weight has been examined in many cross-sectional and longitudinal studies and has been summarized in systematic reviews.” Four studies were conducted, testing the relationship between the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages and body weight.
