The emergent of fast food industry in 1940’s has revolutionized how people eat. It has also brought about how farm and animal products such as potato and meat can be processed into different shapes and forms through the use of cutting-edge technology. Furthermore, it is undeniable that people in the United States have religiously embraced fast food. Over the years, the well-known fast food chains such as McDonald and Burger King have become monumental corporations globally and have seen their profits grown exponentially. French fries comprise fat, salt, simple carbohydrate, protein, sodium and acrylamide. For example, a medium serving of McDonald’s French fries contains a total of 19grams of fat in which 2grams are unsaturated fat. Also, it contains 266mg of sodium (Althea 20). Even though these numbers seem inconsequential, frequent consumption of fries will add up and could be detrimental to one’s health and wellness. Acrylamide, recently found in fries, has been determined by experts to have carcinogenic property. It is formed when starchy foods such as potato are heated at high temperatures.
As reported by Cohen, “The chemical forms when carbohydrate-rich foods are exposed to high temperature during frying and baking. The higher the temperature and the longer a food is cooked, the higher the acrylamide level; fried foods contain the most” (Cohen 113). Also, study shows a large serving of McDonald’s French fries contain 82 micrograms of acrylamide and a large serving of Burger King French fries contain 59 micrograms per serving (Jacobson 2).
