Fast food got its start on Remarkable Route in California, where the McDonald brothers opened their first restaurant in 1948. Today, fast food has become very popular because of its great taste and low price. Many families in the United States no longer have time to dine together due to an increasingly busy lifestyle. In 2004, Americans spent $148.6 billion on fast food (Min, 2013). In the past 3 decades, foods sold at fast food restaurants have been of lower nutritional quality. More recently, fast food restaurants appeal to healthier customers by offering healthier choices on their menus. The first fast food restaurant was opened by Dick and Mac McDonald in California, in 1948. The first logo for the restaurant was the “Speedee” …show more content…
The initiative pushed for children to have healthier food and drink options. Today, parents can now order milk and juice in place of soft drinks in many restaurants as a result. Another healthier option now available is apples instead of fries.
The evolution of fast food has changed drastically since the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative was created. Based on modern research, the healthiness of food now plays a larger role in fast food evolution. Fast food organizations and companies have listened to current demands and trends by promoting healthier lifestyles and offering healthier food options. Min (2013) examined the effects of globalizing fast food restaurants in the United States and Korea, but for this review, we will focus on the United States. His studies reveal that service attributes are considered the most important aspect of a customer’s impressions of quality. Foods that typically sell at fast food restaurants are low in nutrition and the consumption of fast food has been associated with poor health among children and adults. The study has consistently found associations between excessive weight and fast food intake. Over the past decade, public discussion and awareness about the role of fast food in the American diet has increased. This research also reveals that public pressure on the fast food industry to improve the quality and healthiness of their food items has increased.
