Pollan shares This “rule of thumb” all throughout his essay by saying most of the things to eat are processed nutrients or nutrient-enhanced food rather than the food that the past generations mostly used to eat. Also, the writer emphasizes which foods not to eat too much, such as the food that has health concerns. The author states how the French eat all sorts of unhealthy meals, and still, most of them are healthy and better than Americans. His argument here is what to eat is more important to think about whether it is healthy or not. The author indicates that “people do not eat nutrients, they eat foods, and foods can behave very differently than the nutrients they contain” (Pollan). A scientific research points out that, the person who eats foods high in fruits and vegetables present some defense against cancer. On the other hand, the Author indicates how the poor quality of the Americans caused in high chronic diseases that linked to the diet. Pollan compares how the: “Americans suffer much higher rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity than people eat more traditional foods” (Pollan). Most of the chronic diseases are related to the unhealthy foods. So, this result shows that nutritionist is the route of the unhealthy modern American diet. Pollan proposes nine guidelines 1. Eat food (the real stuff), 2. Avoid food that has health claims, 3. Avoid food that has unfamiliar ingredients, 4. Stay away from the food highly processed, 5. Eat less of it, 6. Eat mostly plants, 7. Eat like the French, 8. Cook for yourself, 9. Eat like an
