Fast Break Poem Analysis

Improved Essays
Fast breaks are five seconds of heart pounding and jaw dropping anxiety. While not everyone likes the sport, it is well known that basketball takes and extreme amount of love and dedication. Edward Hirsh shows this in the poem ?Fast Break? by using literature devices such as vivid words and similes. Hirsh uses similes to express the hard work and love put into the game of basketball. ?Gathering the orange leather from the air like a cherished possession,? (ll. 5-6) shows that the players have the ball and can?t let anyone have that ball. That is their way of scoring, so they are acting like toddlers in a sandbox fighting over a toy. ?Almost exactly like a coach?s drawing on the blackboard,? (ll.15-16) express the hard work and dedication

There are in total two poems in Slant Six I used as models to write this poem. The first one is “Someone asks, what makes this poem American?’ and it inspires me to find connections among daily things. Specifically, Erin draws the conclusion that “American is anywhere” at the first time by discussing about where the “normal” American food comes from and different customs behind these American food and how American society contributes to the combination of different cultures. Once Erin draw the conclusion that Americanness is everywhere, she works on verifying her conclusion by both describing a normal American mini-marts, Bill’s, and using examples to convince people have opposite ideas.…

In this poem I use the strategy Internal Rhyme, each verse has 8 syllables and the whole poem has 8 lines. This poem symbolises about how some people just wander aimlessly through life not knowing what will happen next; will they be a saint, or will the lead a life of crime? I've used this formatting to show how formal some people may appear to be, which is the left side of the poem, which uses only one font. The right side represents the crumbling happiness of said person. These fonts were chosen to show the many moods they can go through, with a mind of a day to day basis.…

Mr. Edward Hirsch uses vivid language, and hyperboles in “Fast Break’ to show a hard working team re-bounding the ball and hurrying to score, before time runs out. Throughout “Fast Break” the poet uses hyperboles to make his poem very dramatic. For example, (L.11) “looks stunned and nailed to the floor.”…
