If you look at all of his photos throughout his essay you will see that they are all black and white. Looking at picture 13 you see three little kids with what looks like their father living in terrible conditions. Which being in black and white adds a dark and gloomy feel to the picture because it makes the photo itself look sad. This is perfect for what Franko is trying to portray in his essay, he wants the audience to feel sad and use this sadness to motivate them to act. So that is a big pathos appeal and strengths the heart strings being pulled from the audience reading this essay. Franko also uses a broad range of pictures not just focusing on one thing for them. He uses pictures of people, animals, and even military influences on these farmers. He adds all of these different images to show many sides of this same story because these challenges are not only affecting the farmers trying to grow crops. In picture 6 a donkey is seen, which is very skinny, eating from a bucket laying down next to a rundown stable. So it is seen that these struggles are also impacting the animals live there such as livestock that the farmers use.
