Not only does Hemingway depict Frederic’s inner alienation from the war, but he also depicts Frederic’s separation through his interactions with Italians. When Frederic is in the hospital in Milan, and a rude barber comes in to shave him, the porter describes, "He doesn't understand very well, and he thought I said you were an Austrian officer" (AFTA 79). This interaction is significant because Frederic is thought to be an "Austrian," the enemy, by an Italian, one of the people whom he serves and protects by fighting in the war. Frederic is disrespected by someone whom he risks his life for by fighting in the war, undermining the romantic notion of soldiers achieving reverence from ordinary people for engaging in war. Hemingway additionally depicts Frederic’s withdrawal from the Italians through his interactions with non-Italians.…

He didn’t live up to his promise and was not a man of his word after he was “saved.” This vignette is followed by the short story, “Soldier’s Home” which is about Harold Krebs who returns from war and is feeling empty. He can’t love anymore, not even his own mother, and he can’t pray because it is too difficult. When he came back, the world seemed more modern and complex, but all he wished for was a simple life and to avoid talking about war. Hemingway shows that war was more of an emotional and psychological battle than a physical battle, because they were still fighting it mentally when they had returned home.…

Not only has Frederic failed to help his friend, one who he has known for a while, win over Catherine, but he even has the audacity to physically show her love upon only his second encounter with her.…

“Love is an endless mystery, for it has nothing else to explain it” a quote by Rabindranath Tagore, summarizes the themes implemented in “Hills like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, and “What we Talk About When we Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver. These two stories, contain a husband and wife who attempt to decipher the meaning of love. Hemingway’s characters do this subliminally, whereas Carver’s character’s discuss the meaning in a much broader fashion. Both authors have similar writing strategies, but have a few differing literary techniques. These two aforementioned stories, use similar structures and setting, but contrast in their use of symbols, to convey the author’s negative attitudes of love through their themes.…

The biggest endeavor for us humans is getting through life and accepting what is to become of it. F. Scott Fitzgerald who wrote the short story “Babylon Revisited” and Ernest Hemingway who wrote “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” both give us a very real interpretation of how their characters, in both stories, overcome and conquer their own struggles through life. They both have very relatable situations which are interpreted through the dialogue and express it in an emotional manor, but not in the same way. While a lot of Fitzgerald’s writing was about wealth and partying, Hemingway wrote more of mournful and reflective style writer with his short stories.
