In the darkened interior, a bar greeted them. To one side stood four small tables upon a wood plank floor, covered in straw, dust and clumps of dried dirt.
Vig looked around but didn’t see anyone. “Not very busy, are they?”
Gall strode up to the bar and peered over it. A pair of eyes stared back up at him.
“I ain’t got no money,” squeaked a voice.
“We need a room and stabling for our horses,” Gall replied as he dropped two gold crowns on the bar. The old man’s rheumatic eyes lit up as he emerged from behind it.
“Certainly, come this way.” He led them back to a small hallway adjacent to the bar. His boney hand pointed toward the end of the hall. “The last two rooms on the left.”
“I’ll prepare the rooms,” Vig rejoined as he slipped down the hall, Britta in tow.
Gall turned, and the old man stood in his path, licking his lips haphazardly. With impatience, Gall dug out a silver crown and slapped into the man’s hand. “That is the last of the generosity you’ll get from me.” The old man nodded his head and grinned.
Something about the old man annoyed him. He grabbed the front of the man’s shirt. The coin clattered to the ground. “One final detail, no one is to know we are here. Vig whipped around. “I thought we were going to wait here for the girl. Are you sure that is wise?”
Gall shrugged his shoulders. “Time is against us, my friend. If we don’t secure the Moonstone before Faline does, she will be able to control events. “
