Motivations of Curiosity and Assistance of Others
Farah Ahmedi was intent in discovering a way to escape from war-torn Afghanistan to have an improved life for her and her mother. Unwavering in accomplishing her mission, Nancy Drew incessantly searched for a way to solve the spine-chilling mystery of Shadow Ranch and find the treasure to assist her friends. Out of curiosity, Aengus was insistent on finding the trout who had mysteriously transformed into a glimmering girl. These three characters are very diverse, but one thing they all shared in common was they wanted to find something out of curiosity or to help others.
Farah Ahmedi’s mission was to escape Afghanistan to achieve a better life for her and her mom. They were trying to get through the gate to Pakistan, but the guards would not let anyone through. As stated in the text, “I felt desperate to get through” (Ahmedi 1). Farah needed to get through to Pakistan for her and her mother’s safety. Scared, the two were “barely [...] hanging on [...] we needed to get through” (Ahmedi 3). Luckily, they were saved by a generous man who graciously travelled with them across a goat path to get to Pakistan. The path was lengthy and Farah had a prosthetic leg, but she scaled it quickly. As stated in the text, “It had become a glimmering girl [...] I will find out where she has gone” (Yeats 13,19). This quote shows he was instantaneously interested. Aengus felt the urge to find her because he wanted to “kiss her lips and take her hands” (Yeats 20). This means he wanted to find her out of both curiosity and selfish reasons. As stated in the text, “Though I am old with wandering, [...] I will find out where she has gone” (Yeats 17, 19). He will never give up on his never-ending journey of curiosity.
