Fantasia Monologue

The crescent moon hung low in the sky. Its soft light shone on the rooftops of Brooklyn. Stars shone faintly through the fog. The air was tinged with gray. Every water droplet hung in the sky. Waiting. The occasional tree bowed this way and that. The fog drifted. The wind howled. The rain fell.

“Mommy, can we go see the movie Fantasia after Daddy drives us home?”

“Okay, Billy.”

“Ooo, we could take Mary too right?”

Thanks Dad!” I chuckled and turned around to see through the rain. Lightning flashed, struck a tree, and the tree’s shadow reverberated in my eyes. “Laura? Can you hear me? I’m Roger! Can you hear me?” She didn’t move at all. I slowed moved my arm to her neck, feeling for a pulse, even the slightest rhythm. But there was none. My hand dropped as I stared in shock at my beautiful wife who was dead. Dead. Her large blue eyes covered in a glassy wan. Tears welled in my eyes as I stooped over, shaking.

“Dad? How is Mom?” Billy asked quietly. I couldn’t answer. I couldn’t stop staring at her. Her dull eyes were unfocused, looking straight through me, into the sky. Her hands, now icy cold, unmoving by her sides. Her mouth relaxed, curved downwards as if even after death, she was still in pain. Then I realized, I killed my wife and injured my son. I killed

Tyler, trying to win back her attention, asked Lauren's opinion on a CD he held. She was distracted. I stared at the deep-voiced boy, taken aback, but he was looking away toward the dark forest behind us. His manner left a strange impression on me, and I tried to ignore it without…
