In the morning before school, while they are preparing lunch, Fannie snapped at Kim, she also got mad at Otis right in front of the kids. All of these things contribute to the children’s stress as well, they see and feel that panicky mood and energy around them that they notice and it very much involves them into it. Sylvia seems to know more about how not to show her children her stressed self too much. From the story, it seems like she always puts on a brave face and tries not to show her children how stressed she is. I think the source of stress in their lives are the other children that question why they wear the same clothing every day, why they missed the field trip today. I think it would be the opinions of their peers that would cause stress in the children’s lives more than anything else. And when the children are stressed, feel like they are under pressure or need their parent’s attention they act out, which adds even more stress on the parents. Because the parent’s main job is to make sure their child is happy, taken care of, and is treated well by other. On page 9 of the book it says that Sylvia is worried about her wages and if that will be enough to support her family. She is worried that when she is no longer getting the help that she will not have the funds to cover her children’s medical expenses, or can they maybe get a place in a safer neighborhood. All those things go through her head and add more things for her to worry about. For Fannie I think the other stressor is that her husband is gone a lot. She needs that extra help at night, but he doesn’t get home early enough for her to be able to take a breather when she gets home. The second to the last paragraph, it says: “Fannie wished again that Otis cold be home more at night so they could feel like a real family…” (Gesticki, 8).
