The metal detector was used to help many instances over history, one being an attempt to locate the bullet that assassinated President James Garfield in 1881. The metal detector was also very important in finding sunken ships, gold, and money and many more discoveries. Using electromagnetic induction, the metal detector was able to evolve over the years. Alexander Bell, had created one to help locate bullets in soldiers and later one in the President James Garfield, a man named Gerald Fisher improved upon it years later.

Alexander Bell had created a metal detector to help find bullets in wounded soldiers. According to the article, The History of Metal Detecting by metalhunting.org, it states, “He was trying to come up with a device that could

Bell tested it by firing rounds first into a wooden board and then into animal carcasses. Lastly, he performed tests on Civil War veterans who still had bullets in them.” This tells about how he made the metal detector and he had tested his device on soldiers and worked hard to help many people. The president was killed by an assassin who shot him, and Alexander Bell helped to create a device to try and locate the bullet. In History of the Metal Detector By Mary Bellis, it says, “In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector. As President James Garfield lay dying of an assassin's bullet, Alexander Graham Bell hurriedly invented a crude metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate the fatal slug. Bell's metal detector was an electromagnetic device he called the induction balance.”PUT EXPLANATION HERE In another article,Famous Inventor Tried to Help Save President’s Life, by National Park Service, it states, “On July 26, Bell made his first attempt to use his induction balance device to find the bullet. The first attempt at scanning Garfield’s body proved a failure as the static made it impossible to correctly hear if the device was detecting a metal signature.” Alexander had a limited time to create the metal detecting device but he was still able to with the help of others and trial and error, even though he wasn't able to locate the bullet before the president died. Gerald Fisher was the first to create an actual metal detector device and sold it to the Navy and continued to improve it. The History of Metal Detecting by metalhunting.org states, “Gerhard Fischer, a German engineer and inventor, invented the first metal detector in 1935. He used it to find valuable metals and later sold the rights to his invention to the German Navy. The German Navy used this new technology to locate parts of sunken ships during World War II.” The metal detector was even able to find valuable items from wars. In that article it also states, “Fisher continued to improve on the device, making it more compact and portable so that it could be used by anyone. He also added features like depth indicators, which helped people know how deep they had to dig in order to find what they were looking for. Fischer’s metal detector was the first model of its kind,
