Recurring Nightmare Famine has been a problem of Africa for as long as anybody can remember. These past years have been especially bad because of the El Niño weather occurrence. Because of the temperatures being warmer than usually, there has been a real lack of rain which resulted into unforgivably drought. The drought made it so that the harvests in Africa either failed or yielded tiny amounts of food.
Famine is occurring almost everywhere in Africa. Just take Ethiopia and South Sudan for example. Many people in South Sudan could not plant crops because of the fighting that is happening. In the article, “People are starving in East Africa -- again -- as the world looks away,” Serge Tissot of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization stated that, “ Out of 12 million people, 5 million people are food secure. It means that there are 7 million who have problems”(Dixon, 1). The fighting has kept the people of South Sudan from planting their crops which has led to a huge famine within …show more content…
The major lack of food has caused prices for food to sharply increase. Children have had to drop out of school either because the family can not afford to sent them to school or the children are helping their family make money. In the article, “Effects of famine stretch far further than hunger,” Melancon, Managing Director of Disaster Response and Training for BGR, tells Mission Network News, has stated that, “ as high as 80% drop out rates in available education venues since the famine struck,”(Ranish, 1). All of those kids have lost their chance at education in an establishment. Famine has also caused massive migrations of the people who are being affected by the famine to leave their homes to go find food. When people leave to go find food their homes are often being taken by others. Even if famine is resolved, the effects of it will linger for
