The study specifically seeks to answer these questions:
• Why are people getting a gun and killing people?
• How does family breakdown and family violence cause gun shooting? What impacts does family breakdown leave on children’s lives and make them commit crimes?

BACKGROUND: THE ROLE OF MENTAL ILLNESS IN MASSIVE SHOOTING
In everyday news, it is strongly believed that there is a link between massive shootings and mental illness (Metzl and Macleish, 2015). A study shows that during the time period from 1994 to 2004, gun shooting was only 9 percent of all crimes, but during the time period from 2005 to 2014 it increased by 22 percent (Beck, 2016).

“Wade Michael Page killed 6 and wounded 4 at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin” (Higgins, 2015).The reason for Page’s gun shooing was his mental illness due to family breakdown. His parents got separated when he was very young. His father married with another woman who did not gave him motherly love. He was raised by an aunt and grandmother (Higgins, 2015).
