In the short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” a family is going on a trip to Florida, but the grandmother would rather go to Tennessee to visit some connections she has there. Her actions to try and alter the destination of the family vacation can be interpreted as selfish and persistent. For example, she tries to persuade her son, Bailey, to take them to a Tennessee by mentioning that a criminal, The Misfit, has escaped from federal prison and is heading to Florida. She notices that her son does not acknowledge her comment and adds that the children, John Wesley and June Star, have already been to Florida, that it would be better for them to visit a new place.
