There is a strong role of family tradition in the household of the characters portrayed,

such as the youngest child of the family is unable get married and have kids,

instead has to look after the parents till there death. This is strongly noted

throughout the book as the tradition of the De La Garza family, which has gone

on for generations. In this case Tita is the youngest of the family and has to obey

the role of caring for her single mother, as the father of the household had passed

away many years before hand.

In summary and review the majority of the characters in this family broke many

of the steadfast tradition of the time with respect to a woman’s place in the

family and the community. This was characterized through Tita’s reaction to

remain subservient to her mother, Tita’s flagrant disregard for the morals of the

time having one an affair with a married man who was her brother in law,

secondly in falling pregnant as a single woman. Further Gertrudis was

completely outside the stereotype of women of that time, following her dream

and what she wished she could do, rather then follow what society expected her

to do as a woman.

Pedro also failed to meet the expectation of a man at the time where he schemed

to be with a woman that he was not married to rather then honor and respect his

chosen spouse. Even Mama Elena broke tradition and social values as she fell

pregnant with her first daughter (Gertrudis), which resulted in the death of her

husband. One of the few characters that conformed to the social codes of that

time, which even now would be considered highly exemplary for any person, was

the doctor’s care and consideration for

Caridad had married with her high school sweetheart, Memo, until she found out he’s been cheating on her with his ex-girlfriend. “You could bet that Caridad was making it in a pickup off a dark road with some guy who name the next day would be as meaningless to her as yesterday’s headlines”, Caridad relied on guys to ease her broken heart to get her mind off of her three abortions and her failed marriage (Castillo 27). She went through a lot of pain as her ex husband Memo didn’t seem to care about Caridad’s pregnancies since it was implied that she didn’t want to be a single mom. Caridad was rejected by her own community because of her one night stands with strangers because in this society, it was a male-dominated society where women weren’t supposed to have one night stands, rather “females were expected to have only one sexual partner, none before or outside of marriage” (Machismo Sexual Identity). Men were the only ones who could do this which even made their reputation “extramarital affairs are the primary way in which males prove their masculinity” (Machismo Sexual Identity).…

The relationship shared by Lincoln and Booth in Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks encompasses both negative and positive aspects. Similar positivity is portrayed more dominantly in Jack and Teresa’s loving relationship in “The View from Culion,” a short story in Monstress by Lysley Tenorio, while Tita and Mama Elena’s destructive relationship in Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquirel demonstrates more negative characteristics. Out of the three works, the repulsive way Mama Elena treats Tita illustrates how this work is the most destructive due to the physical, emotional, and mental harm that is caused. While not as harmful as Tita and Mama Elena’s situation, Lincoln and Booth live a tragic life that brings hard feelings and cruel, impulsive actions between the two brothers at times. Although, deep down the brothers exhibit glances of a deep love and affection they have towards one another and their past.…

As a small child she was practically raised by Nacha while Mama Elena was just an authority figure. Nacha fueled Tita’s passion for cooking which also molded who she grew up to be. Mama Elena ruled with an iron fist and treated Tita like a servant making her do tasks like washing her mother in the bath as well as cooking. Mama even furthered the odd cruelty by prohibiting Tita from marrying as the family tradition says the youngest daughter needs to live a life away from love to serve the mother until death. In his novel, Chance, author Joseph Conrad famously said, “Being a woman is a terribly difficult trade since it consists principally of dealings with men” (314). Conrad, it seems, is often correct – scores of novels focus in part, if not exclusively, on the relationship and accompanying power dynamic between men and women. For centuries, authors have explored different methods by which to more deeply probe the power struggle between men and women, as well as the power struggle between all people. One such solution is magical realism, a technique pioneered in the early to mid-twentieth century. K. Thomas Alwa Edison wrote in an article for the International Journal of Multidisciplinary Approach and Studies that magical realism was likely developed…
