In summary and review the majority of the characters in this family broke many
of the steadfast tradition of the time with respect to a woman’s place in the
family and the community. This was characterized through Tita’s reaction to
remain subservient to her mother, Tita’s flagrant disregard for the morals of the
time having one an affair with a married man who was her brother in law,
secondly in falling pregnant as a single woman. Further Gertrudis was
completely outside the stereotype of women of that time, following her dream
and what she wished she could do, rather then follow what society expected her
