Family Therapy Case Study: Therapeutic Approach

Hello Rosabla,

1.) Family therapists tend to be active, directive, oriented toward the solution of problems, and open to using techniques borrowed from various approaches. How would this fit for your therapeutic style if you were working with families? I agree that not one theory alone can help a client because each client is very unique. As we are as counselors no one counselor is the same and I like to use more than one theory/approach when working with each client. As you mentioned, everyone is different and using the theory or theories that best fit your clients’ needs is in the best interest of the client and can be beneficial. If you know the reasons why these theories work best for certain issues I believe it is okay to use many.

I understand and appreciate how important family is to you from our group course and this course. Most of my family grew up in America, but my mom is originally from the Phillipines. My dad is origin from Connecticut, but his father came to America from Italy. I agree that one thing that separates me from them is that I am more independent. They also depend on me a great deal and I feel obligated to help them now because that is what family does in my cultures. I like how you mentioned, your independence and your decision to move back to California at the end of the graduate program. I believe if I told my parents I was moving they would not like it either so I believe you are very brave and will be fine on your own from all the things that you have brought up now. It is ultimately your choice to stay close or move so they should be happy for you regardless if they like your choice or not. I personally feel like I also have been around my family all of my life, but I don’t think I would like to be that far away from them at this time. I can see that you do value family, but I also value your independence and that is okay. As I said, they should be happy for you no matter what choices you make after school. They may be upset at first, but hopefully they will realize it was for the best eventually. 3.) What are your reactions to the video “The Color of Fear”? What might be the barriers to effective counseling in your practice when working with culturally diverse clients? You might use ecological perspective to discuss this

Model of Family Therapy The Experiential Family Therapy model is a theory that was developed by the practitioners of Carl, Whitaker, Walter Kempler and Virginia Satir. With the Experiential Family Therapy Model, the goal of the therapist is to catalyze the natural drive of the family to reach growth and the full potential of the individual members of the family. Still, the individual practitioners allowed their personality to be instrumental in the success of their unique forms of Experimental Family Therapy, although their focus and goals were similar (Goldberg, 2013). Because of the importance of the individual personality in the success of a model, Whitaker’s Symbolic-Experiential Family Therapy (S-EFT) was selected and will be argued for…
