Family Systems Theory
Family systems theory is the theory in which individuals can be understood, based on their relationships with the people in their family. An individuals behavior is inextricably connected with the attitudes and behaviors they learned from the family. We all live in society, and most are part of some sort of family system, open and or closed which is determined by how it reacts to change. An open family system is open to change, and works to accommodate it, they plan and work together to reach their goals, there are fewer barriers, as there is a presence of open communication to reduce conflict, and keeping everyone informed and engaged on the strong trusting bond, the relationship is nurtured. “Which is a key concept to family system theory, it represents a person’s capacity to distinguish between and balance his or her thinking and feeling selves. “An individual thinking process, allows them to detach from, or look objectively at personal reactions or biases. (Walsh, 2013) I can relate to this concept, as I believe I had a well-differentiated self, and depended less on others acceptance and approval, acquiring my own principles thoughtfully, reflectively and autonomously.
My family system struggled with emotional cutoff, avoiding sensitive issues, use of silence, withdrawing in order to avoid ongoing conflicts. Due to the unresolved emotional issues from these experience, led to a strained relationship, as well as contributed to my rebellion, and adverse childhood experiences that caused many issues throughout my transitional youth years. Intergenerational transmission was clearly transmitted to my parent’s generation, their reflected sense of self, was to satisfy what they believed others wanted and expected, concerned with conforming themselves to avoid conflict, to protect reputation amongst others, showing a low differentiation, creating an undifferentiated ego mass resulting in control, and escalating power in the family system. By applying the family systems theory, as it helps us recognize that relationships and behaviors are complex and almost never tied to a single cause or event. Both recognize that the target of intervention includes the entire system and its ecosystem. Increasing the helping agent's knowledge about the factors that influence the family, and the key issues for the individuals, which help identify what is potentially supporting the client’s behavior, and what is compromising the performance. When these systems are understood than intervention methods can be implemented, to help them overcome challenges in their pursuit of a better
