Family structure can directly influence a number of aspects in an individual 's life. When family is dysfunctional, other parts of our lives become dysfunctional. This is because family is so closely tied to us from when we are born. They help develop our beliefs, values, attitudes and identity. Again our family is our ultimate support system and when that fails, we begin to see other parts of our lives being affected as well.
The rise of teenage pregnancy in Canada is concerning as the relation with family has seen to have an impact on teens. Although teen pregnancy is not a social problem, the consequences associated with it make it a social problem. Another social impact would be how they would view themselves in association with a teen mother/pregnant teen. Others would be judged based off the teens choices and decision. This affects the broad community because generalizations are being made. For example, labels the parents(of teen) could get are inconsiderate, didn’t raise the child right, even though that may not be the case. Now “Brenda’s got a baby”(Shakur and Evans 1991) is commonly repeated to show that this is not only Brenda’s title and master status, but extends out to her mom, dad and boyfriend. People become defined and labeled deviant based off other people 's decisions(Holmes et al 2016,16). Lastly, the solution to this problem would simply be to remove the stigmatization placed on the individual(Holmes et al 2016,16). Another possible solution to this problem could be to try and change the way one views himself or to draw back from which they are receiving these negative labels from(if possible). Often times when teen girls “are starting to feel discouraged… they are more likely to get pregnant”(Bielski 2013). Whereas “young women who feel optimistic about their future.. tend to not get pregnant”(2013). If you surround young teens with optimistic kind of people, this will in turn affect the individual and the way they view themselves; there on decreasing teen pregnancy.
