What is the most important thing in life? Most people would say money, others would say happiness, and well I say that the most important thing in life is family. The novel “Cry the Beloved Country” had a very strong message based on family sticking together. Although many other themes from the novel really stood out to me, I chose “Family sticks together” because it is the strongest theme in my opinion. The message that the novel provided is that no matter what our family members do we can help them by sticking by their side. The main character in the novel is an elderly man named Stephen Kumalo, who was a humble, kind, and loving

James was a rich non colored man who loved and cared for his son dearly, his name was Arthur. In the last couple of years James and his beloved son, Arthur have not seen each other due to their personal differences. James strongly believed that, “birds of a color stick together” and his son did not. His belief changed when his son was killed by a colored man. This man that killed Jame's son was Kumalo’s only son. James changed his mind because he realized that the most important thing in his life was gone. As soon as he realized that his son was gone, he started to regret everything he ever said about colored people. He started accepting and respecting his son's views on colored people. He did it for his son and his own sake, not only did he accept colored people but he actually took action, and did whatever he could do to help them. I believe that because he loved his family and his son so much he was willing to change his thoughts about colored …show more content…
Family should always be together to support each other. Kumalo and James both stood by their families and both were willing to sacrifice something for their families. They both believed that family should stick together no matter how bad things get. Kumalo never once gave up on his sister nor his son because he loved them, and was being supportive. At the end James also changed his entire lifestyle and beliefs because of his son’s death. Throughout this novel many examples were given to support my chosen theme such as Kumalo and his sister, James and his son’s death, and Kumalo and his

The first theme is standing up for what matters to you. The author, Ria Voros, communicates her theme effectively by showing this in the main character as she stands up for what matters to her. An example in the text is when she stood up for james by making posters. It mentioned in the story what poster she was making “I speak to no one, hunch over my computer, type, cut/paste, download and with all the artistic talent I possess, create” (pg.182). This shows that she is standing up for her friend by using her artistic talent to show everyone that James was something to her.…
