Family Shows: The Brady Bunch And Full House

Themes in family shows have changed drastically over the years. Themes have seemed to transfer from classic topics such as friendship troubles and simple family misunderstandings to family drama and complicated relationship issues, as well as contemporary and borderline controversial issues. Famous TV shows from the 19th century that featured families that dealt with classic TV sitcom topics were shows such as The Brady Bunch and Full House. Popular TV shows today that deal with edgier language and subject matters are shows such as Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. The four series have some incredible differences and similarities despite their age gap.

The big resemblance between all of these shows is that they all have a unique family makeup. The family aspect is a huge component with all of these shows and the fact that the families in these shows are unique to families in other TV shows, probably is what really sets these shows apart and makes them well liked by the public. It is enjoyed that these shows weren’t the typical sitcoms for their era and that they brought new family dynamics and new situations in the family, rather than the typical nuclear family plots. The Big Bang Theory represents families that are just getting started and families with no kids. Bernadette and Howard are a family that is expecting their first child soon, and Penny and Leonard are a family without any kids yet. This makes the family aspect of the series special because most family sitcoms have couples with multiple kids of varying ages and this defies that status quo. Full House is interesting because there are multiple families living under one roof as well as non-family members. The Tanner Family features a single parent family that lives alongside a nuclear family, the Katsopolis family. Family-friends, who also live in the house influence the lives of both the kids and parents in the house. This is unique to TV because a lot of times shows feature different

In the book, The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap by Stephanie Coontz, the author deconstructs various types of stereotypes and myths embodied by television shows that romanticize family life and gender roles. Coontz (1992) states that these idealizations promote the “traditional family” myth which she describes as “an ahistorical amalgam of structures, values, and behaviors that never coexisted in time and place” (p.9). The notions derived from this myth are a compound of characteristics that resemble mid-nineteenth century and early 20th century paradigms concerning family life (Coontz, 1992, p.9). Coontz (1992) describes both components in detail in Chapter 1 describing the first as a mother-child oriented family…

America’s favorite sitcom, Full House, was dearly missed after having a very successful run for eight seasons. While the show came to an end in 1995, according to Business Insider “not only had Full House anchored ABC's Friday night comedies and stayed on top for most of its seasons, but it's still airing 40 times a week in repeats” (Nededog 1). The popular show had many fans hoping that there would be a reunion for years. Fortunately for them, there was, however, a little different from a traditional one. In television, humor is used as a way to acquire high ratings and get the viewers to keep watching. While this seems as a positive only for the television producers, it is also a plus for the viewers. Humor in television has changed with the audience that it is being shown too. While having to change the humor, television producers can also change the stereotypes and characteristics of the characters and how they incorporate humor to send a message. With this, humor as well as the portrayal of single parent families has changed throughout the years.…
