The point of view in the story “Everyday Use,” by Alice Walker plays a big part. Throughout the story, one of Mama’s daughters came to visit. The way Mama and Maggie see her is not in a very pleasant way. In fact, they are scared to tell her no when it comes to anything. Observation In her story “Every Day Use,” Walker contrasts two sisters’ characters and shows how their different personalities impacted their view of and appreciation for their farming family heritage. Dee is beautiful, intelligent, bold, and active and “‘no’ is a word the world never learned to say to her” (Walker 610). It became known that she “wanted nice things…at sixteen she had a style of her own: and knew what style was” (Walker 611-12). Thus, Dee learns to have her own way and her outspoken, rebellious personality makes her demand much from others.…

One would rightfully assume two sisters raised by the same mother in the same household would be quite similar to each other but this is most definitely not the case in “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. It is clear that the sisters in the story, Maggie and Dee, are complete contrasts of each other. To begin, the most obvious difference between the two is their appearances. Maggie is a fragile, awkward girl who seems to have little to no self-esteem. In the beginning of the story, their mother says that “good looks passed by her (Maggie)”…

When I say “mother and son” I mean very authoritative and you can tell this by the way she talks to her son. “Honey, you think you know all the answers, you don’t” or “I know what you want better than you.” These terms make the mother seem as if she’s higher than her son and she knows what he actually wants and also makes her sound strict. But under all that seriousness she can be ver compassionate with her son, “Please try to put some money away.” She really cares for her son and wants him to save money for…

To many a mother’s love is an unconditional and an irreplaceable act of kindness. This love is seen to be a guide to growth and a love that helps to shape young children into well rounded adults. Throughout Jamaica Kincaid’s memoir, My Brother, her mom tends to show affection only in times of need when someone is down and does not really provide the leadership most mothers give. Most of the memoir is about intimacy, but a lot it deals with the relationships between mother and her children. Kincaid claims that the love her mother would give would not always be the best for them…
