Growing up in New York, in my earlier years, I always wondered why my family was so distant. My family moved around a lot, so I expected this may have been the reason. I was always curious why everyone just didn 't live close together on one block, or why my aunt had to fly so far just to visit a few times a year. I would always ask My grandmother, Ethel Regina Walker, these questions, though she never seems to enjoy dredging up her past or where she might have lived as a young kid. I wasn 't even aware of, except for uncle Kenny, who her siblings were. She did tell us, her children-grand-children, she was an orphan, and she spent most of her life in and out of foster care. Howard 's parents; Howard Banks Sr, and Florence Atwaters were of African-American descent(though I 'm not certain, but I 'd imagine, birth by former slaved parents) who settled in a small town of the state of Virginia, sometime after the abolishment of slavery the post-Civil War in 1865. Howard Jr 's parents also Had another son, Howards Jr 's brother, name Robert Banks. Howard Sr and Florence were sharecroppers who worked hard to provide a decent life for Howard Jr and his Brother Robert. Unfortunately, shortly after Howard Turned five-years-old, his mother passed away, leaving Howard Jr 's Father behind to raise Howard Jr and Robert alone. Howard Jr was able to attend school until he turned 12, but due to the economy and the country slowing moving towards the great depression by the end of the 1920s. Because of these events, Howard Jr wasn 't able to complete school and immediately was forced into working to help support his father, and brother. He sold wood and held other various manual labor job. Couple years later, Howard Sr passed, and this forced Howard Jr, and his Brother to migrate north, in separate
