Ms. A talked about what education means in her family. She said education in her family is very important. Her parents never let them forget the reason why they came to Canada, which was for them to get a better education. I found this interesting because this is the same thing my dad always tells me. He says I should always have it in mind that I came to Canada for serious reasons and to have a better education; I did not come to Canada to play around.

For example, her family, they are Roman Catholics therefore their practices might just be a little different from other peoples. In regards to marriage, the most typical way is an arranged marriage, which is mostly conducted by the two families. The bride and the groom are expected to be of the same socioeconomic status, ethnicity or the same religion. Also, babies are highly adored by everyone; however they are mostly kept around the families in the family. As for the elderly, they are often taken care of by one of their children out of respect and love for their parents. I also found this interesting because in their culture they have arranged marriages. In my own culture, the girl decides to whom she wants to get married to. For me, I can choose who I want to be my husband; there are no arranged marriages in my family. Before I started from any verbal exchange or sitting down, I introduced myself at the beginning of the interview. I said that my role is I am a PSW student from George Brown College, the expected duration of the interview will be one hour and the purpose of the interview was to develop my communication skills as a PSW student. I also stated that her name would not be disclosed in the interview. I learned that building a relationship with others depends on learning about the different background information of people. Some people choices or views on health care can be influenced by their culture and spiritual practices. This background information is the best way to understand someone’s culture.
