Family Law Case Study: Margaret G. Zickuhr

For my mentorship paper I chose to speak with an attorney named Margaret G. Zickuhr. Mrs. Zickuhr is a Marquette Graduate and who practices primarily family law out of her firm named Houseman and Feind LLP where she is a partner. I chose to speak with Mrs. Zickuhr for several reasons. Firstly, because of my interest in ADR practices specifically mediation and negotiation, I have begun to look into possibly going into family law. Secondly, being that we are licensed upon graduation in the state of Wisconsin I have considered the idea of staying in the state for a few years before possibly applying for reciprocity in another state later on. Thirdly, Mrs. Zickuhr has spent her entire career in smaller law firms, which is the path I foresee my self taking, rather than spending time in a large law firm environment. She also did note, that she does not generally market herself in these smaller circles that involve her son because she tries to keep her personal and professional lives separate in order to avoid any type of awkwardness. Being that family law is generally a very contentious area of the law, she finds its easier to refer cases to outside attorneys rather then tae them on her self. However, she did note that the compensation plan for the partners in her firm also takes into account the origination of cases. Meaning that, a partner can get credit for bringing a case into the firm, even if they do not work on it, because the case originated through them and then was referred to a partner in that area of law within the firm. So if Mrs. Zickuhr gain a referral so say a real estate law case, she can still help that individual is they are form the PTA, directly and still get credit for it. She explained this has been a good way for her to talk the line between the “go to mommy lawyer” and still not get involved in the dirty laundry of the parents of her sons
