I think family is probably the most influential socializing agent. My siblings, grandparents, and my other family members have played a large role in my socialization, but my parents have played the most critical role. “Parents, however, are the first most influential socialization agents.” (Benokraitis, p. 70) The purpose of socialization is to teach your child to control their behavior and to make responsible decisions. Parents, from your earliest age decide the environment that the child will grow up in, which influences the child’s social development. Parent determine where the child lives, what school they will go to, decorating the child’s room in a female of male style, they books and toys they buy, and choose other activated that the child will be involved with. Media is been pushed children at such a young age. “Increasingly, advertisers are targeting children as early as possible” (Benokraitis, p.73). Growing up my parents didn’t really let my siblings and I watch much TV or play on electronics. If we asked to watch TV, my mom would tell us to just read a book or something, which at the time seemed unfair, but now I appreciate what she did because I really enjoy reading. We weren’t allowed to have a television or computer in our rooms, and we still don’t to this day. We didn’t get cell phones until we were 15, which seemed like a really long time to wait when all your friend have them, but it really was not that big of a deal and I am very thankful to have one after waiting so long to get one. I am really thankful that my parents didn’t just turn on the television when we were getting too loud or crazy, but would interact with us and find something else to do, such as a board
