When I asked Monica who all was in her family, she gave me a list. Both of Monica’s parents are not living as of today but both were influential in her life. Her dad just passed away this summer in August and her mother passed away when she was four years old. She has a sister that is three years older and a brother that is four years younger than her. When it comes to the extended family, she has 13 aunts and uncles and has 100 plus cousins. One last member that she mentioned was her special childhood dog, Cleo who was a collie/German-Shepherd mix. Out of Monica’s family/friends, eight of them have influenced her but three mainly have impacted her life to make her who she is today. The number one person that influenced her is her dad. She explained that her dad is/was her everything. He supported her, backed her up, and remembered her birthday when no one else in the family did. The town was poor but had southern hospitality. She also spoke about sayings that were used during her childhood. For instance, people would say, “ it is better to be seen than heard, only speak when spoken to, and blood is thicker than water”. Monica expressed that externally she did what she was taught to do, but internally she could not wait until the day she could be set free. As a child growing up, she felt that she did not fit in with her peers because she lived in a low socioeconomic status (SES) family and back then, only the father could work; therefore her dad was the only one working to support all five of them.
