Family Influence:
My family consists of my mother, my father, and my two sisters. My entire family is from Cali, Colombia. When I was six years old my parents decided to move to the U.S. At the time, I didn’t understand why we were leaving our house, family and friends. It wasn’t until I became a teenager that I began to understand the reasons behind their decision. One of the reasons why my parents decided to come to the U.S. was for a chance of having a better life. When I compare my homeland to the U.S. I always tell myself “you have it good here.” I feel safe in this country. Here, I can walk down my street wearing gold earrings and some name brand shoes and not fear for my life. Among other reasons, my parents also moved to make sure my

I spent 3rd and 4th grade in Mamaroneck Avenue School before moving to another school district. My previous teacher, Ms. Formoso, decided that I no longer needed ESL. Third grade was my first year immersed in a monolingual classroom. I remember learning various things from my third grade teacher, Ms. Levine. I learned about the different stages of an essay. I also learned how to write cursive. Ms. Levine taught us how to write cursive by tracing each letter and then copying it. Once the alphabet was learned in cursive we started forming words and practicing writing letters in cursive. I spent a good part of my day practicing how to read and write in English. I learned how to write a book report. I also learned how to identify the main idea, setting, and the characters of a story. Fourth grade with Ms.Kaebnick, was a very rewarding year for me. I learned how to write poems and was even chosen to be a part of a gifted science program. The way I remember fourth grade is as a year of exploration and growth. Not only was I learning content area instruction with textbooks, but I was learning about other equally important things. Some of those activities included making a brochure, giving oral presentations, choosing books that were on my grade level, and learning how to check out books from a library. My education continued in Alice E. …show more content…
I had several offers from different private institutions, but I knew that I was going to be responsible for paying my own tuition. When I was 17 my parents were struggling to keep our home and pay off their credit card debt. I knew that FAFSA was not be of any help because my parents owned a house in White Plains, one of the most expensive areas in Westchester County. I enrolled at the City College of New York in the fall of 2013. Before my first semester began, I took a summer freshman workshop to prepare me for college. The workshop was an introduction to critical reading, writing, and research. In college, I learned how to revise and edit papers. I also learned how to cite any references using APA and MLA format. Most importantly, the several writing classes that I have taken have given me practice writing various different contents. I have taken several English classes that have helped me comprehend diverse genres. Classes such as English 230, has helped me become a better non-fiction

Growing up, I have met a lot of people, had a lot of experiences and memories. Some were enjoyable, fun, and some were stressful, but my favorite memory was coming to America. Moving from Africa to America made me a better person and taught me to understand people better. It gave me opportunities to change my lifestyle, be around others that are different from me, and expand my education. One memory that tops all memories was coming to the United States. My father came to the United States alone in 2000 when my mother was pregnant with my little sister. He stayed in New York, and found a job in a clothing store. Then, two years later after having my sister, my mom came to join him. After living in the United States for 5 years, and getting enough money. They later moved to Birmingham, Alabama, my dad…

T and C are very limited in their suprasystems. Family are people that are supposed to be your support system and the people you rely on. We find going to church is really helpful for many people, however, T does not go to church or believe in God. T does not have a lot of friends and family that she could lean on for support. For support she attends NAMI. She states that NAMI is a helpful support group where people understand her emotions and take interest in her daughter’s diagnosis. According to the Family Theory, each part of a system is interrelated, dependent on each other, and affects one another (Codina Leik, 2014). Therefore, if one part of the system is damaged or dysfunctional, such as one member of a family, the rest of the system or family is also affected (Codina Leik, 2014). It is extremely important to incorporate this theory into assessments and family interventions in primary care. Both of my preceptors incorporated this system into their assessments and care.…

Going into kindergarten was intimidating, with all the bright colored posters with words even I couldn’t read. Having to be assigned seats next to strangers who soon would become my closest friends. Then came the group reading, when I in kindergarten and other levels of classes they put me and my classmates in reading groups depending on the level one is on. Now, I wouldn’t say I was at the lowest level, but I definitely wasn’t at the highest either, which is where I longed for. Every person has a story. Every family has a past, a place they come from, a place they call home. For my family, that place is now in the United States. However, this wasn’t always our home. My family comes from a small country in Central America called El Salvador. Both my grandmothers arrived in the U.S. sometime in the 1980’s. This is where our story here begins. My grandmothers both came to this country seeking the American Dream. A life away from poverty, a life that held hope for not only their futures, but also that of their children and grandchildren. Coming to the U.S. is by far not an easy decision. When one makes this choice, s/he also chooses to leave everything s/he has ever known behind. One’s family, home, culture, identity, everything. There is a song that speaks true to what it is like to be an illegal immigrant; “He is not from here because his…

Being raised in a completely different environment than I do now has taught me a lot and I’ve grown so much because of it. I had to quickly adapt to a different setting that I was not used to or ever experienced before. Coming to the United States at the age of eight years old was quite a difficult transition because I did not know any English and the culture and environment is different. At the time I did not understand why I had to move to the U.S. but as I older I realized that all my parents wanted for me and my brothers, was to have the education and life they always dreamed of having. Constantly I think about what our life could have been if I didn't move to the U.S., how my parents could have kept up a strong relationship and a good family business. The only reason we are here is for the education this nation can offer us and a brighter future. Last year I went back to Mexico to visit my friends and relatives and it was the first time I felt happiness within oneself and I wanted to stay there longer to really enjoy the feeling of being back home. Coming back to U.S. really opened up my eyes to see what was the real meaning behind this change was and determined to finish school and have a better future than parents did. “ Well, and I am to a be a scholar, I would like to go to the south to the city and enter a great school where I can learn what it is to be learned. Migrating to the United States was not an easy task; coming from a country where the economy and quality of life seemed to worsen as the days went by, made the United States the Promised Land in terms of opportunity and better value for one’s future; or at least in our minds that’s what the thought of America symbolized. Despite only being six years old when my parents decided it was time to leave everything behind and come settle to a foreign land, the struggles that we underwent as a family in the United States, have marked not only me, but my loved ones for life. As I think back to the excruciating pain I saw in my parents eyes as they left everything they had ever known behind; it frustrates me how still to this day, many immigrant families…

Recently there has been a lot of talk about illegal immigration in the United States. I think it is important for people to understand why these people from other countries choose to come here. To better understand the reason behind people coming here illegally, we first need to know why people in general wants to come here. The simple answer for that would be because they want to live better and safer life. To get it started, I will share my experiences and expectations of the America before I arrived here. 4 months prior to my flight, all I had in my mind was the “America”. My perception of America was the fancy buildings and happy toys, just like in the movie; the Spiderman. It was amazing to see the Spiderman flying from building to building. This is how I imagined the America to be, but once I arrived at Atlanta, Georgia I realized that America was different from what I expected. America did have fancy buildings, but also people with no home. Over all, the quality of life here seemed a lot better than anywhere else I had previously lived. United States offers protection, freedom, and opportunities to its citizens, which is the main reason why people migrate here. However, all those…

Within my household, there are many different types of communication. As a whole, we do not do well communicating with each other. My dad would be classified as an aggressive communicator. My mom on the other hand, is entirely a passive communicator. She struggles to get across her emotions clearly. The combination of these two types of communication, is not always a good one. My parents’ relationship is strong and unwavering yet, their ability to communicate well is sometimes lacking. They often times butt heads and are also both very stubborn. I definitely am a mix of both of my parents when it comes to communication. Often times I am a very assertive communicator. But when something is deeply troubling me, I tend to be more of a passive communicator and not talk about things. Even if it is entirely evident that something is going on. My other three sisters are all passive communicators as well.…
