Back in Africa, she was set to marry Besa, and on the plantation, she was bought to be Clay’s lover. Right in the beginning of the book Rwasi was talking to Amari about Besa. “I saw Besa walking through the forest, heading this way! I have seen how you tremble like a dove when he is near,”(Draper, 1). Draper was showing it was clear to all how in love Amari was with Besa. Just hearing his name or seeing him makes her happy. On the other hand, Amari was never happy to see Clay. It was clear to Mrs. Derby Amrai was not excited about her relationship with Clay. “Mrs. Derby hesitated, then said, ‘I know about you and Clay.’ Amari stepped back, her heart beating fast. What did she mean, “you and Clay”? Did the women think she went to his room voluntarily? Amari didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to say all the jumbled thoughts in her head. ‘It is an unfortunate situation,’ Mrs.Derby said with feeling. ‘But I have no control over what he does. To tell the truth, I have very little power over anything around here,’ she said morosely. ‘I just want to let you know I sympathize. I hope it ends soon,’”(Draper 123). This quotation was used earlier to prove a similar point. Draper was showing you don’t have to be blood related to know when someone is unhappy or extremely happy. It made Amari want to give and die, realizing she may never see the man she loves
