Family Homelessness Shelters
On a daily basis we see the homeless men and women on the street. After all they are easy to spot, because they are wearing dirty or oversized clothing, and pushing shopping carts filled with their belongings. It might sound strange, but I was thankful for this stereo-type six years ago, because that way when people looked at my son and me, they didn’t know our secret…we were homeless.
In 2010, the economy was in crisis, and with every crisis there are victims. My son and I were among the thousands affected by the bad economy. At the Gospel Mission if the family consists of a single mom and male children between 12 years to 18 years old are not allowed to sleep in same area. Gospel Mission feels that at 12 years old children are entering into a time of sexuality interest, and therefor separate boys from their single mother. Furthermore, they only shelter you for the night. There are no guarantees a bed will be available every …show more content…
This a temporary shelter for families with children under 18 years old. Every family must go through an application process that entails the following: Referral by an agency, a phone interview, a face-to-face interview, background check, and a drug test. Once the adult(s) in the family have made it through the application process the counselor explains the rules. The family is given 24-hours to accept the open slot. Each family in the program can stay at least 30 days if following the rules. But they make exceptions on a case by case basis. They provide case management and work with families helping them to eventually stand on their own and obtain housing. My son and I were in Family Promise from February 1, 2011 to July 2,
