Once a week, I have family dinner at my grandparents’ house. I have been attending these dinners every week for the past seven years and still going, never wanting to miss one. These dinners are nothing extravagant but a delicious home cooked traditional Chinese meal and a bonding time for the family. Even though we see each other every week, there is something new to talk about and something to laugh until everyone is in tears.
People think there is nothing special about this dinner, but the meal is not the significant part; it’s the memories made in the house. This house we eat in is the house my grandparents’ first bought when they came to America together. where my dad grew up in, and where I spent my summer days at. The table we eat on

Most students already have a head start by being tutored and/or come from parents who are intelligent and know English; however, I don’t see that as a disadvantage because I take all the opportunities given to me. Education is my number one priority because having an outstanding education will lead to a superb job which will lead to a bright future. In order for me to attain my goal of college, determination and persistence are key skills right now because stress surrounds me everyday; I’m consistently working on stacks of homework to the point where I’m exhausted, but I still give my full effort to try to keep up with the rest of the …show more content…
Every morning, my dad got up at 6:50 in the morning to drive us to school. My dad gave my brother and me the biggest bed to sleep on while he took the couch, so we got a better rest. My dad’s goal was to make sure I would not have to do any chores in order to focus on my academics. My dad worked from nine in the morning until ten at night with no food on the table when he came home. My dad called me every day right after school to make sure I got home safely. Even though he parted from us, from me, my dad deserves to be free from all the stress and the agony he felt the past forty-five years of his life.
The loss of my dad came with the responsibility to fill his role in the household. There are only three of us at home - my mom, brother, and me. I have matured more in order to create less stress for my single working mom and to create a better version of myself, that I know my dad would be proud of. I do more chores around the house while still completing my homework on school nights. It has been over a year since I lost him. I know that academics were important to my dad and it would mean the world to him if I continued my education, something he never got to

On June 3rd of this year, my father passed away, this was a very difficult moment in my life and many decisions had to be made on his behalf. Preceding my father death, my parents determined that it was important as the only child to be the Executor of his Estate in an effort to propel me into manhood and the realities of life. My parents’ decision regarding my role after my father’s death was programmed and classical because they knew this honor would instill the strength, courage and pride needed to survive in this world as a young African-American man. During this time, I learned the significance of properly planning, organizing and managing the history of a person‘s entire life; therefore, I am thankful to my parents for trusting me…

My family has been in the USA for more than four years and there is a day every month when we all get together, talk about culture, pray together, eat together and have fun together. In our family get together, my mom and my aunt make our traditional dishes as we watch them and learn. They teach us to make one dish every time and ask us to prepare it by ourselves when we get together and that the rule we have been following for generations. At that night we have rice, curry, chapatti, and sweets.…

I either visited him or he would come home on the weekends since my mother and I were around to care for him. I wouldn’t talk about my father in public because I always felt like people pitied me if they found out. I didn’t feel like I deserved pity. Growing up with my father made me feel strong. I felt like I could make it through anything because I had already had to put up with so much.…

Throughout my life I have always been a daddy’s girl. I would beg my dad to take me hunting, fishing, golfing, to work, and just about anywhere my dad went I wanted to go. We had a close bond until he was diagnosed with stage 3 liver and colon cancer during my senior year of high school. I was devastated by the news since the doctors had given my father about 6 months to live. To top it off, it was the first year I was able to attend a Mardi Gras ball and that year I was supposed to walk my dad out since he was a masker who rode in the organization’s parade.…

The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future. My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior.…

Instead of talking with me rationally and discussing what went wrong. I never felt that I could go to my father and talk about anything. It seemed as if me and my father never had a bond.…

Barriers and adversity are two things that shape people and their lifestyles. Like any other person, I’ve had my fair share of problems. However, my biggest burden has been the fact that no matter how much my father wishes to be in my life, he can’t. On May 25, 1995, my father was imprisoned in Mexico. I’ve only heard his voice in phone calls and seen him in pictures.…

All I ever wanted was to be in his truck, singing along with him to “Paint Me a Birmingham” like we did every other couple of months when he was around. This was our way of bonding, however as each birthday passed, I grew to look for a box in the mail full of presents instead of his presence. I began to think to myself, maybe this isn 't how a father daughter relationship should be, maybe there 's more than just being sad that I can take out of this, and then that was what opened a door to one of many lessons in life. Growing up wasn 't the easiest without a dad. After all every little girl wants her dad, but I learned to cope with the fact that he was not always around.…
