During this clinical day, I gave many different IV medications to three of my nurse’s patients. Being able to learn the skills in application lab, then getting the opportunity to solidify my knowledge during clinical was very beneficial to me. This included knowing not to push IV medications too fast as well as knowing how long to clean the port before giving the medication.

4. What was the best part of your outpatient clinic day? Please describe.
• The best part of my clinical day was getting to interact with the seventeen-year-old girl and her family. After hearing that they are from the same city I was from, I found a major way to connect with their family. This calmed me down when giving medications and talking to her like she was anyone else I knew. She was such a sweet girl to get to know and talk to, even though she had just gotten a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis. She helped me remember that the patients in the hospital, as different as they are, just want a person to talk to sometimes.

5. Was there a part of your outpatient clinic day that needed improvement or could have benefitted from a different approach? Please

Relieving patient fear and anxiety can be a challenge when the nurse has less time to spend with the patient because of increased patient load. This does not allow the nurse to develop trust with the patient and family and discuss details about the patient and their treatment. There are ways to improve this type of care, but it will take dedication and a hospital wide effort.…

Today it felt extremely strange not coming into the clinic until 12pm. Once at work, I helped with filling meds while everyone was taking their lunch breaks. It was a pretty slow day and everything was pretty much caught up, so I went to our pharmacy and started helping take inventory and cleaning the shelves off. This was extremely helpful for me because it was helping me know where each drug was and Mary was quizzing me and asking me what each drug does while we were moving them around.
