Family does not have a universal definition, and over the years the definition has changed from a traditional mother, father, and children to several variations. Examples of these are parents that are unmarried, are of the same sex and those that do not live in the same household but do what is called co-parenting. The definition of family according to Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson (2015) is "Family refers to two or more individuals who depend on one another for emotional, physical, and economic support. (p. 116) The genogram focuses more on the genetics than the external support system. When looking at the genogram with families, they become more involved in the disease process and supporting the patient.
An ecomap on the other hand, focuses more on the outside support system such as community and friends. Outside support system is those outside of the nuclear family such as neighbors, church members, and family friends. Ecomap may also include the patient's physician and medical staff that care for them.
Shelby Latcherie favors more of the ecomap than the genogram. She has a good family support system but is also encompassed by more community and friends. She is popular in her hometown and volunteers frequently at events in the city such as the Christmas fair. She works hard as a pediatric nurse and is favored by her co-workers. She has a very close network of friends who care for her and for her mother, who was one of her main caregivers. Friends, Truvy, Annelle, Clairie, and Weezer, are the closest to Shelby and M'Lynn and give the most support that is noted. Shelby and family are also members of the Presbyterian Church. This theory was developed in 1976 by Sister Calista Roy who taught this theory as part of the nursing curriculum at Mount Saint Mary's College. The key concepts are broken down into four components: person, health, environment, and nursing (Petiprin, 2016). This model allows input from different sources to come to a mutual outcome, especially regarding health issues.
