How does Mr. Chafin’s life illustrate the intersection of family and public life?
Sgt. First Class Jeffrey Lee Chafin is an American citizen and member of the U.S. military who had fought overseas for his country. When this military man fell in love with Lynne Hales Chafin, married, and had a child (Eris) he had no idea that he would be in an international spotlight in four short years. This spotlight was not because of his military achievement but because of a divorce and ultimately the legal custody of his child with his wife, a British citizen. Elaborated code relies more on the ideas and feelings of the individual and not the rigidity of institution. Both of these concepts of communication are important and should be utilized for success in any society or relationship.
I think these modes of relating may be very applicable within this marriage. As I mentioned before, I’m curious about the short length of the marriage and the difficulty being married to a member of such a rigid institution as the military. While my husband was not in the military, he has been in law enforcement for many years and there are many similarities. While my husband does not, others who spend many hours in a structured environment may have difficulty with light conversation, with having fun, or with an unhappy child. They may be too authoritarian or unjust in their treatment of their spouse or child(ren). Their values may be too embedded within the condensed code. And that rigidity does not make a good
