Family is a strong toll on the Nordwall family who attended the Pipestone Indian Boarding School of March 1935 through June 1945. I chose the theme family because of the many different situations throughout the book, where the Nordwall family is sent to the Pipestone Indian boarding school in Minnesota. Frank grew off of his family, friends, and piers in “Pipestone”. Without the loving family and caring piers in Addie’s life what would his Pipestone boarding school experience consist of? How would things have been? Would Adam have been able to push himself in school? Or make the right choices after many years of being punished after the wrong choices?
Although Addie lost his father at a very young age, he was still able to reflect off of his father, which even may have been a cause of how he grew to be such a responsible and outgoing individual. “We just got a bunch of boxes of military surplus clothes and supplies from World War I. I’ve seen pictures of my father in his uniform. He fought the Germans in that war. Now I can wear a uniform just like my dad. (P.70)” As the Nordwall family got older many of the boys entered in the military. Many people influenced Adam in his life. Although there were many influences in Adams life his family was by far the most to move him and help him when he needed it.
