Familial Periodic Paralysis (TPP)

TPP closely mimics familial periodic paralysis(FPP) clinically. If hyperthyroidism has not been previously diagnosed, Patient’s characteristics like age, race, gender, and family history may provide the only clues to a diagnosis of TPP. TPP usually does not have a family history of similar episodic weakness unlike FPP.TPP occurs in slightly older age group (20-40yr) unlike FPP which occurs in adolescent age group.TTP usually has history of hyperthyroidism and sometimes peripheral stigmata like thyromegaly, nodular goitre or signs of graves opthalmopathy. There may be a seasonal prelidiction like occurring at summer months as well as occurrence in early morning following typical triggering factors mentioned above.
