Identity means everything in today's society. It can tell who a person spends their time with, how they act, their attitude, and so many other things. Environment plays a big role in who someone really is but doesn't make a person. To have one's own self identity they need to make it for themselves and not based on what others think an individual's identity should be. This includes being compared to others and falling into the cycle that they laid out, whether that be from family and friends, or even to the extent of a race of people. Being compared to others happens all too often. It is not possible to get away from, and it will always follow. Family members are very easily relatable. They will be the closest to who a person could be. People can even be compared in a much more broad sense, such as a religious group or with the people that live in the same area. I did not have an object that exactly symbolized the cycle of my brothers actions but the cycle was there nonetheless. My desire, not do what they did was my motivation. If I was in the same activities that they were as kids, I always wanted to do better. An example of this is my drive to break from what my siblings had done is to go to college. One of my brothers has gone to college but nothing came from it and he did not stick with it; the other brother did not go at all. My goal through high school has always been to go to college. A sport that I work hard at is baseball. I work so hard at it because I enjoy it in general, but another factor of why I put work into it is that it could lead me to college.
