In 1692, Puritans in colonial Massachusetts faced an interesting event called the Salem Witch Trials. The first sign of witchcraft was discovered when two girls, Elizabeth and Williams were having “fits.” The local doctor blamed their unusual movements on the supernatural. Satan worried the Puritan community because they believed that they always had to behave to go to heaven. Whether puritans were in or out of their home, they believed the devil was always watching them which is why they were always cautious towards their actions.…

When it comes to folktales and scary legends people tend to not believe in them now a day. Back in the ancient time people had the belief of witchcraft. The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. Although it is believed that the witch hunt of 1692 started in Salem Village, in reality it first occurred in Charlestown. First of all, the witch hunt of 1692 started long ago in Charlestown by Margaret Jones who was a midwife, and the first person to be executed for witchcraft in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.…
The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 and consisted of prosecutions of women and some men who were thought to have been practicing witchcraft. These women were taken to trial, and if they were convicted of practicing witchcraft, they were violently put to death. With the rising tensions in the colony, The Salem Witch trials of 1692 were caused by curiosity in religious beliefs, young women claiming they were possessed by the devil, and troubles arising among the community. By this point the people of Salem would consider themselves Puritans. They had many standards they had to abide by to keep good Christian standings, and as the people of Salem were learning more about the Christian religion, they learned about the devil and his possession.…

Why Salem was Different The Witch Trials of Salem in 1692 was a prime example of hysteria overtaking the community. Two dozen people were hanged due to the trials. Although there have been other cases in history that have had large amount of people being frantic, very few led to lives being lost, nor were as accepted in the community as in Salem. Due to certain aspects in the community and due to their beliefs, the frenzied cases of Salem were allowed to take place where the obscure reasonings would not have been accepted in most other places.…
I believe that a person is innocent until they are proven guilty. If you are accused and face consequences right away and are not proven guilty it is unfair. It would be fair to go to court and have the accusation be backed up with proof or else it would be considered a slanderous statement. Accusing someone without any proof will cause a lawsuit that may last months or maybe even up to years.…
The Salem Witch Trials were incidents, which took place in the 1600’s, and which had proved the absolute devotion the Puritans had to God. The people of Salem targeted others, and even put them to death, for their ‘betrayal of God’ through any kind of unexplainable incidents that are given the scapegoat of witchcraft, even though it was never explicitly against any kind of law in their colonies. This same type of event has happened again and again throughout the history of the United States, and even of the world, by many different types of religions, and hate, radical, and prejudice groups. The United States government even took a part of this prejudice profiling of people in both main Red Scare events after the World Wars against people accused…
The Salem witch trials were the first and only witch hunt to result in numerous deaths and rely mainly on spectral evidence. Most importantly, Salem did not follow the standard set by previous possessions: to keep the accusations made by the possessed inside the household. The accusations were used for selfish and greedy reasons. Salem Village was dealing with land disputes within the village and trying to gain independence from Salem Town in 1692. Some of Salem’s residents moved from Maine due to loss of family and land to the Indians.…
She begins to blame society for her misfortune and desires that are not acquirable by using the Devil as justification. The false accusations and chaos that ensues is much like the McCarthyism scandal of the 1950s. Senator Joe McCarthy, leader of the House Committee on Un-American Activities began as a result of communistic scares in the United States after WWII. The job of HUAC was to hunt and expose guilty people of having relations or feelings for communists. The “witch hunt” of the 1950s resulted in the death of several people along with suffering on the part of many others.…
