False Representation In The Media

Decent Essays
One of the most important details of my event was the impact of society and representation. Like said before, I got criticized for my hair for being natural, I was mindful of this on my journey, because of what I had seen and heard from the media and society. The media's depiction of black women is of false representation and my goal was to show my bravery and confidence, as well as healthy hair. Nothing is wrong or ugly about natural kinky hair, people think this way because of the television, magazines, and advertisements promoting products depicting black women with silky, straight hair. Hair is not healthy when it is straightened or relaxed, it is more like making it stressed instead of relaxed.

In todays society the media constantly shows and glamorizes the hair of other races outside of African Americans. The term “good hair” is often associated with straight, long and silky hair types. Instead African American women hair is associated with terms like thick, kinky and nappy. These aren’t just terms anymore that are used freely instead, they’ve become very stereotypical and judgmental to the black race. This puts pressure on African American women to feel doubtful of their natural hair, so much that black women use chemicals to make their hair silky straight, which ultimately result in damaged hair.…

As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…

Growing up in an economy where every model has long luscious hair and it is flowing in the pictures it is common for young girls of African descent to ‘perm’ or ‘relax’ their hair in order to achieve the mainstream goals of beauty. I along with many other members of my family have tried to achieve said beauty. Natural hair however is harder to maintain and in itself rewarding. Life with my relaxed hair was what most would call easy. A simple part and press in the morning…

Black women in America today are embracing their natural hair like no other time. Although any one race can be considered to have “natural hair”, the phrase is often defined differently in the female African American community. When I look at my hair in the mirror and say that it is “natural” I am stating that it is hair that hasn’t been touched by that “creamy crack” but, rather, replaced with a head full of “nappy hair”. We as black women are making it a point that our hair is beautiful in the way that each hair follicle grows into the various hair textures among us. For many African American women, natural hair is a way to protest society’s expectations of beauty and create a new standard of what it means.…

Miss Representation, is the misrepresentation of media on people’s lifestyle and their personality. Media is shaping us by the way we feel about ourselves, our political decisions, our emotions, and the way we think of society. The images we see on social media are impacting us, but mainly children. The main problem with media is the idea of females believing that only looks matter and males believing that looks are important on females. In video games, magazines, social media, television, and other communication we see a stereotype that women are slim with big buttocks and breast.…

It then analyzes how this battle consequently influences the way African American women manage their impressions with how they chose to wear and style their hair. My study is specifically looking at how African American women use hair as a tool of expression and self-presentation in today’s society. African American hair has been studied in a historical context, analyzing the cultural significance dating back to African tribes (Byrd & Tharps, 2001) as well as the commodification of the afro during the Civil Rights Movement (Walker, 2000). While historical accounts contextualize the phenomenon of black hair, other studies analyze…

Cultural change influences the social assets of a person or a community. It can affect people's behavior, perception, or the way they think. America, in particular, is a weird nation because it is an outlier (Watters 492). In Ethan Watters’s essay, “Being WEIRD: How Culture Shapes the Mind,” Watters depicts the importance of culture shaping human development, focusing on the psychological aspects that cultivates the human mind. If America decided to change its cultural view of itself, it would be more aware and accepting.…

This semester I researched misrepresentation and how it is being used in today’s society. Being here at UTA gives me a great opportunity, because, with so much diversity at this university, I can better understand the perspectives of those who are misrepresented. The cause of misrepresentation is when a society wrongly interprets a group based on an attribute they have. This issue is a lead problem all over the world and it is seen in all states, cities, and communities. A problem of representation where people feel different and unequal.…

Therefore, American media, having the ability to greatly promote a public interest in scientific literacy, must take responsibility to report only accurate scientific information in order to diminish the possibility of promoting unsubstantiated science and misleading the public. With the media becoming a profuse vehicle for education, interests in the sciences have grown in the public. However, current coverage on scientific information today is largely obfuscated in the media. That is, today, information displayed through the media readily conflates into normative preconceptions of the public that may or may not be in its most accurate form. The step between translating scientific journals to the public undoubtedly creates susceptibility for misrepresentation of the information presented in scientific studies and journals.…

In the Argumentative Essay entitled, “Black Women Embrace Your Kinks And Your Curls,” the author is encouraging black women to embrace their natural hair. The author provided reasons why black women are desperate for what society depicts as good hair. Some reasons included that they are insecure, pressured, or straighten their hair because it is convenient. She then shows women that their hair is a part of their identity. Society is not to determine who has good hair and who does not have good hair.…
