“Accusations of assault or strangulation can lead to years of imprisonment and thousands of dollars in fines,” (Lawyer), these fines can be fatal to anyone and need to be taken seriously. “False domestic violence accusations are also often made during the divorce process. Divorce and child custody proceedings can be emotionally charged and highly acrimonious’” (Lawyer). These situations are very intense and become difficult for the people involved. “25% of all divorces include allegations of domestic violence. The courts in 48 states must consider these allegations while making rulings in child custody hearings. Protection orders are clearly meant to offer protection in serious situations. Now, they have been turned into a weapon in divorce cases,” (MacDonald). These people will do anything to get what they want, and that in end in serious consequences. The court tends to not charge people who falsely accuse others of abuse, “Courts never charge the accuser in a false domestic abuse case. The reason being is that they want everyone to feel comfortable enough with the legal system to come forward in actual cases of abuse. Giving a victim any additional reasons to not speak up could cause harm to more people than the good that could come from prosecuting someone.” (MacDonald). Domestic violence cases are commonly reported in the police work force. Most cases are not broadcasted, because they want to keep the press away from it. "Cases reported to the state are the most serious ones—usually resulting in arrests. Even so, nearly 30 percent of the officers accused of domestic violence were still working in the same agency a year later, compared with 1 percent of those who failed drug tests and 7 percent of those accused of theft,” (Friedersdorf), most officers even still have their job after being accused. People accuse National Football League (NFL) players more so than officers, because NFL players are famous and put in the spotlight.
