When most people think of quilts, they think of them as every-day household objects that serve a simple purpose. They do not think of them as intricate pieces of art that can communicate the deep personal expressions of an artist. In the exhibition titled 40 years of Color, Light, and Motion, located at the University of Mississippi Museum on University Ave. and Fifth Street, the quilts masterfully crafted by Caryl Bryer Fallert-Gentry display the latter. The many quilts on display in the exhibition highlight Fallert-Gentry’s expert use of color, texture, and motion that she used to express herself through the art of quilt making.

In the center of this quilt, there is a beautiful woman, who is wearing a loose red gown, leaping elegantly into the air. Just behind the woman is an enormous bird that is soaring through the sky. Only the bird’s outline is stitched into the quilt so the spectator can see the woman and the colorful background through the bird. The background of the quilt is composed of wavy lines. The section of lines near the woman’s feet are shades of green and brown, and the largest portion of the lines is varying shades of blue. The color of specific lines along with their wavy nature help convey the feeling that the woman is leaping from the earth and soaring conjointly with the bird. This woman on the quilt could represent Fallert-Gentry, and the quilt as a whole could represent her living out her dream of becoming a successful artist. The quilt is not restricted to her though, and it could represent anyone living out their dreams. On the Wings of a Dream, Reflection #21, and New Dawn are just a few of the many quilts on display in 40 years of Color, Light, and

She has made it clear that she values her family, their diversity, their connection, their generations, and it is the title of her poem which solidifies this. By naming her quilt The Century Quilt- and her poem subsequently-…

The memories that are held in objects are what is important, not the actual object itself. In the poem “My Mother Pieced Quilts” by Teresa Paloma Acosta, the speaker’s loving tone is evident in her use of imagery, voice and connotation as she explains how her mother would use old pieces of clothing to make quilts for her family to keep them warm. The speaker’s loving tone is shown by the fact that the mother took time out of her day to make quilts for her family out of old clothing in order to keep them warm. Acosta’s mother was such a caring woman for her family for such reasons like making quilts for her family.…

The analogy, "Life is like a quilt" is expressed very well through the character Sophia in the movie How to make an American Quilt. I think that this analogy is a very interesting and compelling way to think think about life. Each piece of the quilt has an important role in the finished product: the scraps Sophia used to make her quilt symbolize the things holding her together, her support systems, and her inside character. The quilt top in meant to be the finished product, or the end of her life story. This phrase is a very impressive and deep way to express one's unique journey and life experiences.…

Normally, when we think about quilts being made, it evokes images of women in the colonial days making blankets. While this is true, quilting did not begin here. The history of the quilt has been hard to trace, but it is believed to have originated in Asia before the first century C.E. (Davies). The earliest known version of a quilt was found in a Siberian cave tomb. It was covered in patterns that were relevant to that time; animals and abstract figures (Davies).…
