The people of the war are shown to become more aware and suspicious of their surroundings. One time this is shown is when Peewee sees a mat on the floor and questions whether there is something under it. This is when Peewee and Richie are in the hut after a pacification run gone wrong. This is when Richie is describing what is happening to himself and Peewee, “We walked into the hut, and he went over toward the corner. There was a rattan throw mat on the floor”(Myers 181). A second time that Fallen Angels shows that soldiers become more afraid and aware of their surroundings is when Monaco throws a fake grenade in the barracks. Richie narrates what happens during this event. Richie Perry narrates, “Monaco smiled, lifted the armed grenade high over his head, and flipped it toward Brunner”(Myers 108). One way that the soldiers change is by how religious they are. Some people gain a lot of faith while some lose it. A second way that the combat soldiers differ from their past selves is that they have a lot more accountability for their surroundings and are more suspicious of them. Another way that soldiers have changed is that they have become braver, independent, withstanding, and valiant. Everyone has the opportunity to have an experience like this, it does not have to be fighting in war, it could just be pushing your fears, or anything that puts you out of your comfort zone. The book, Fallen Angels, by Walter Dean Myers, is a great example of soldiers changing and becoming different people through their time in combat.
