Most events that lead to the fall of the empire came from Rome itself and from a military defeat. Every decision the senators made had a huge effect on the rest of the world, many stupid decisions weakened the city and eventually collapse. Politics played a great deal in the downfall of this great empire and the roman government system was not designed to control such a vast empire. Poor communication and transport networks the main government could not keep every corner under its control. The result of this poor governance was a creation of two capitals which brought problems of its own. The roman empire was split into two, the western region was weaker and unstable and thus collapsed in 400 AD. Rome gained much of its wealth from other enemies it has conquered and plundered, but with no rich enemies to attack the wealth reduced. Rome wasn’t self sufficient and the government piled debts which lead to the depletion of public building and roads as they could not pay the workers wages. Also the soldiers weren’t paid and trade to far places eventually stopped due to the risk of being attacked while travelling. Everyone felt the economic pain, the citizens were heavily taxed and this lead to riots and unrest in the public, the public right down to the farmers who eventually died out and Rome lost its economic advantage, it was near hopeless to maintain the rich roman
