Both Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” have similar settings because they both take place in spooky large houses. However, in Poe’s story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the setting is different because nobody likes that house. By contrast, Cortazar’s “House Taken Over,” everyone likes the house.
Gothic Literature is when a story has a bleak setting, tortured characters, strange or violent plot, or a gloomy mood. Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” is a good example of Magical Realism because it has recognizable characters. For example “Irene turned down two suitors for no particular reason…” (38). That is considered as recognizable characters because people in the real world turn down suitors as well. Therefore, “House Taken Over” is an example of Magical Realism because it has passages of the elements that are needed to put a story under the category of Magical Realism.
Gothic Literature and Magical Realism are similar because they both have that scary setting. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of the House of Usher” the house collapses on itself. For instance, “... my brain reeled as I saw the mighty walls rushing asunder ...” (30). However, Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” is similar because the house gets abandoned. This is proven when the brother takes Irene out of the house and into the street, locks the door, and gets rid of the key so no one can get back inside.
