Sin, And Hypocrisy In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

Loss of a Goodman In the short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, a man sets out on a journey into the woods located in Salem Village. On this journey, Hawthorne shows that not everything is as though it seems. Nathaniel tries to show that even though someone may have a strong sense of faith with just a few distractions that could all be comprised in an instant second. Therefore, three main themes become known throughout the story: Faith, Sin, and Hypocrisy. First, Hawthorne shows that Goodman Brown has no other thought in his head, then that faith will lead him through anything. One major hint to knowing that he believes so deeply in faith is the fact that his wife’s name is Faith, and Hawthorne makes many references throughout the story of how Faith will fix everything. Hawthrone is implying that everyone has to two sides to who they are and that nothing and no one is as what is seems. In the story Mr. Brown comes across a ceremony where all of the highly looked upon people were there, and some of these people where the town preacher, lawyers, and even the Catechism teacher who thought Goodman. These people in their everyday lives talk about how to follow in their faith, when in reality they have subsided to the devil themselves. Nathineal reveals at this point that everyone will judge someone else but the same thing themselves making everyone the same as the net person. Goodman Brown kept on insisting to turn around to return to his sweet wife Faith when he heard her voice leading the ceremony.
